'Art beyond Sight'
a sensory art workshop by Yati Sharma
Hyundai Art for Hope 2025 | Travancore Palace, New Delhi
"Art Beyond Sight", a participatory sensory art workshop designed to challenge the dominance of the visual in creative expression. Conducted as part of the Hyundai Art for Hope 2025 event, this workshop invited participants to create smellscapes and capture memories through smells!
The workshop was met with overwhelming enthusiasm and emotional responses with a total of over 50 participants. They shared personal stories and memories that were unexpectedly triggered by specific scents, demonstrating the power of olfactory stimuli in evoking nostalgia. Several individuals became visibly emotional as they recounted past experiences tied to particular smells. This was a profound moment, as it validated the core premise of my practice— that olfactory art is not merely an aesthetic experience but a deeply immersive and evocative medium.

Smellscapes created by a few participants during the workshop

The participatory nature of the workshop was instrumental in expanding the scope of my research. It provided valuable insights into how individuals from different backgrounds interact with smell, reinforcing the idea that scent-based storytelling can transcend cultural and linguistic barriers.
